My first look at the base game of Lucky Barrel Tavern left me a bit puzzled. The graphics and art style were not quite my cup of tea, but the big 6x5 grid with cascading reels and cluster pays looked like fun. However, that excitement quickly faded when I noticed the low symbol payouts, with returns only ranging between 0.80x to 1.5x every 3 to 6 spins. 

Cascades that followed a symbol combination often looked promising but they didn’t get me additional wins most of the time. This made the base game not only a slog but also unprofitable to the point where I was desperate to move on to the free spins bonus game as soon as possible by landing 4 or more scatter symbols. 

It took me some time, but when I finally landed those scatters, I was rewarded with 10 free spins and the chance to rack up cumulative multipliers. By the third spin, I had already collected a 4x multiplier, which helped me achieve a total of 78.25x returns from the round. This helped recover most of the losses I had suffered in the base game, but it did not quite push me into profit, as it came very late in the session. 

In the base game, there is an ante bet option that claims to double your chances of triggering free spins for an extra 0.25x your bet. However, I did not notice much of a difference in the number of scatter drops, so I would not recommend using it for real money play. The same goes for the bonus buy, which starts at 100x your bet which just does not seem worth it.
