What Is Online Craps?

Craps is a dice game in which players can bet on the outcome of a pair of dice. Players can bet money either against each other or against the bank. Due to the fact that it doesn’t require much equipment, craps can also be played in informal settings and is then known as “street craps”.

Craps games come with a rather complex table and quite a bit of jargon. That’s exactly why it might seem complicated to a newbie at first. But once you take the time to learn the rules, along with the table layout and basic bets, you’ll find out that craps is a really exciting and thrilling casino game.

Why Should I Play Craps Games Online?

There are many good reasons why you should play online craps. The digital medium brings more flexibility, along with some unique features. Let’s see what are some of the advantages of playing craps online!

  • It’s more convenient. When you play craps online, you won’t have to leave your home for a bit of fun. Not everyone has the time or the means to travel to a land-based casino to enjoy a session of craps. Thanks to modern technology, all you need to roll some dice is a device with a stable internet connection.

  • It costs less to play. The digital versions of craps games come with the advantage of a lower minimum bet. In land-based casinos, a craps bet usually starts at around $5 to $25 minimum. Online craps, on the other hand, barely even cost anything to play. You can place bets from under a dollar.

  • Craps bonuses are available. Almost every online casino offers some kind of bonus for its players. So whether you’re a new player or a veteran, you’ll be getting some nice bonuses to power up your craps sessions.

  • You’re in control of the pace. Online craps also come with the advantage of giving you full control over how the game goes. You decide when to roll the dice and how much time you spend deciding on your wagers.

  • You always roll the dice. Rolling the dice is the best thing about craps. And when you’re at a crowded land-based casino table, you might not even get to do it. Virtual craps don’t have this issue - the dice are always in your “hand” and you decide when to roll them.

Craps Dice
Craps Online Basics

Even though the table’s design might look complex at a first glance, the rules are really simple. The main reason why craps might get the reputation of being complicated is because of the more complex layout of the table as opposed to other table games.

Just keep in mind that the table is actually mirrored - both left and right sides are completely identical. Once you realize this, craps online free becomes even more fun, getting easier the more you play.

That being said, here are the basic rules of online craps:

  • You play with a pair of dice.

  • The game rounds are played with rolls of the dice.

  • Players take turns to roll the dice.

  • The one who’s turn it is to roll the dice is called a “shooter”.

  • Everyone can bet on the outcome of that dice roll.

  • The outcome of the dice roll is what you get when you add up the face-up pip values of both dice.

And that’s pretty much all you need to know to start your first craps game. If you want to get into details, however, just keep reading the next section.

Online Craps General Rules

Now that you know the basics, it’s time to start playing free craps games for fun. This shouldn’t be that hard, as many online casinos make it as easy as possible to find and join a craps game. That being said, let’s see how you can start playing craps right now!

  1. Choose your favorite casino. First of all, you’ll have to choose a casino where you’ll be playing at. Go ahead and register an account and activate your welcome bonus (if it’s offered and you choose to do so, of course).

  2. Choose your game. Once you’ve chosen your casino, head over to the Games section and choose a craps game that appeals to you.

  3. Place your bets. Once you’re in the game, choose how much you’re going to wager. You can start from as low as $1 and go as high as $500, depending on the game. From the table in front of you, choose the type of bet you’re going to place (Field Bet, Don’t Pass Line, Pass Line etc.)

  4. Roll the dice. Once you’re happy with your wager amount and bet type, go ahead and click the Roll button. If your bet was correct, you’ll win. If not, you lose. Easy as that.

Craps Online General Bets and Odds

The amount of money you win when playing online craps for real money depends on the bet you’ve placed. But before we talk about the bets, we have to talk about the dice rolls themselves. Because, as you’re about to find out, there are two types of dice rolls in craps:

  • Come Out Roll. The Come Out Roll will open any game of craps. Players who want to place a bet will need to wager on either the Pass Line or Don’t Pass Line bet. During this phase, these are the only options.

  • Point Roll. The Point Roll is any number rolled other than 2, 3, 7, 11 or 12. With this type of roll, the shooter will have to land the Point number before they roll a 7. Everyone who bet on the Pass Line will get a win if they manage to do this.

Now that you’re aware of the types of rolls, it’s time we move on to the types of bets themselves. Each has its own odds, so make sure you read carefully through these before you place your bets.

Bet Name

Description

Pass

If you roll a  7 or 11, you win. However, you’ll lose your Pass bet if the Come Out is 2, 3 or 12.

Come

Same as the Pass Line bet - you win if a 7 or 11 is rolled in the Come Out. The only difference is that the Come bet can only be made after the Point number has been set.

Don’t Pass

The opposite of the Pass bet. If a 2 or 3 is landed, you win. If the shooter lands a 7 or 11, you lose.

Don’t Come

Can be made any time after the Point has been set. If the dice land on 2 or 3, it’s a win, if they land on 12 it’s a tie.

Place 6 & Place 8

Place a bet on the number 6 or 8 being rolled before a 7 comes up.

Hardways

Hardways are made of four numbers: 4, 6, 8 and 10. You have to roll an exact pair to roll a hardway.

Craps Online Strategy

Unlike blackjack or poker, craps is purely a game of chance. That’s why it’s quite hard to set up an exact craps online strategy. However, there are a few things you can do to improve your odds:

  • Bet against the dice. Pass Line bets have a 1.14% house edge, while the Don’t Pass bet types (against the dice, as they’re called) have a 1.36% house edge. While the difference doesn’t seem like much, it will matter in the long run.

  • Take the Odds bet. The Odds bet comes with no house edge, so the casino doesn’t have an advantage over you. This is rather rare in the casino world so make sure to take advantage of it as much as you can.

  • Learn the table before joining. Before you join a game of craps, make sure you study the table before joining. When you familiarize yourself with the layout, it will be easier to know where to place your bets.

  • Avoid Big 6 and Big 8 bets. This type of bet implies that a 6 or 8 will be rolled out before a 7. When you compare this with the odds of simply betting on 6 or 8, Big 8 and Big 6 have much worse odds: 7:6 and 1:1 respectively.

  • Set a loss limit. Before you start playing, set a loss limit for yourself and stick to that limit. Keep in mind that you will definitely lose at some point so make sure you have enough money set aside for when that happens.

Most Popular Craps Online Versions

Besides the classic craps, many online casinos will offer different variations of it for their most avid players. The most popular craps variations include:

  • High Point Craps. This variation of craps is known to be quite profitable for players. The numbers 2 and 3 are fully ignored once they show up on the come-out roll, with the dice being returned to be thrown again. You will land a direct win if you manage to toss an 11 or 12.

  • Simplified Craps. In this variation, only one roll of the dice will be thrown by the shooter. You also have a very basic betting system, with no such things as a Pass or Don’t Pass Line bets. The result is known after one single roll.

  • Die Rich Craps. This variation is played with only one die. If you manage to land a 6 on the come-out roll, you win instantly. However, if the come-out roll results in a 1, you instantly lose.

  • New York Craps. In this version, the table is different from the regular one. There are no Come or Don’t Come bets available and you won’t find Place and Space bets either. You can bet on 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 10.

History of Craps

Some people believe that the Roman soldiers invented craps, using knucklebones of a pig as dice. Other people think that modern craps was developed from an ancient Arabic dice game, called Al Dar, which means “dice” in Arabic.

The most commonly accepted version, however, is that craps was created by Sir William of Tyre in 1125, during the Crusades and named after a castle called “Hazarth”. Then, in 17th Century France, this game became popular in taverns. It’s believed that the game of craps as we know it today has derived from the word “crapaud”, meaning “toad” - a reference to the original style of craps played by people crouched over the sidewalk or the floor.
