What Is Online Roulette?

Just like its real-world counterpart, online roulette functions under the same principles. Gamblers will be betting on different numbers, colors or even number ranges. When you play roulette games online, you’re getting all the fun and excitement of the real thing, but without having to leave your house or travel to the nearest casino.

Even though you don’t have a physical wheel in front of you, the thrill of anticipating where the ball will land stays the same. And just like in real life, it’s important you understand the different variations and types of online roulette you can play. So let’s not waste any more time and get right into it!

Roulette Online

Why Should You Play Roulette Games Online?

There are several reasons why you should choose to play roulette online. One of the most important ones, however, is that it’s a relatively simple game. You pick your bet and you place this bet - no other rules or strategies you should follow. But that’s not all. Let’s see what other advantages you get when you choose to play online!

  • You can play at your own pace. When you play roulette in a physical casino, you’re more or less forced to play at the speed chosen by the dealer. Sometimes they might be too fast, sometimes too slow. This is where the online version of roulette shines - you’re in full control of the game, choosing your own pace and even taking breaks whenever you feel the need.

  • You get plenty of rewards and bonuses. Unlike brick and mortar casinos, online casinos will always have some great offers and bonuses for both new and old players alike. Whether it’s a welcome bonus, a deposit one or a cashback bonus, you can use it to enjoy your favorite roulette games at your own pace.

  • You can actually reach the table. Perhaps the most annoying thing about playing roulette in physical casinos is the fact that you can’t properly reach the table. This is especially annoying when you’re the only one playing. With free roulette games, however, all you need is your mouse and keyboard - the whole table is available to you and you’ll be able to relax and get your bets in.

  • You don’t need to leave your house. With online roulette, you don’t even have to worry about getting to the casino. Usually this means wasting precious time and money - gas, parking spots, bus fare. These are all unnecessary spendings that could instead go into your online roulette bets!

Online Roulette Quick Overview

Before you place your bets, you will have to know how to play the game itself. Luckily, roulette has some of the simplest rules. You’ll need to predict which number the ball will land on when the roulette wheel stops spinning. You will do this by placing your bets on a roulette board that has 37 or 38 numbers, depending on which roulette version you’re playing. If you guess right, you win.

There’s really no skill involved at all when it comes to online roulette. It’s entirely based on luck, which is great because even the beginners have a chance at making some good wins. So how do you play online roulette? Nothing easier - just follow these easy steps:

  1. Choose the type of roulette you want to play and then choose a table.

  2. Place your bets on your chosen table.

  3. Spin the roulette once you’re done placing your bets.

  4. Wait for the wheel to spin and see where the ball lands.

  5. Win if the ball lands on the choice you’ve made.

And that’s it! This is all you need to know in order to play online roulette. The best part of playing this casino game online is that you have all the time in the world to decide on your bets. Now that you’re aware of the steps, you’re ready to play some free roulette online!

Online Roulette General Rules

There are many variations of roulette, but we’ll focus on the European one, as it’s the most popular. Roulette isn’t hard to play - on the contrary, all you need is luck. We’ll even let you in on a little secret: most players who learn to play roulette, do so by playing European roulette as it’s the easier variation to master. It’s also the one that offers the highest chances of winning but we’ll get into that a bit later. For now, let’s see what are the rules of roulette!

  1. You have 37 chambers with numbers ranging from 0 to 36.

  2. All numbers are set in either red or black, with the exception of the 0, which is green.

  3. On the table, you will see the different bets you can make.

  4. Decide how much you want to wager.

  5. Once you’ve decided on an amount of money, choose the field you want to bet on.

  6. Click the “Spin” button and watch as the roulette spins.

  7. Cash in your wins if you’re lucky!

Online Roulette Bets and Odds

When you engage in online roulette gambling, there are several types of bets you should be aware of. You can bet on single numbers or on entire variations of numbers. There are three types of bets you can make: inside, outside and announced.

Inside Bets

Inside bets are the bets you place on any number on the roulette table. They usually have lower odds, which means higher payouts than the other bets. When you bet on a single number, that action is known as a straight up bet and it awards the highest payout of 35:1. Other inside bets you can place are known as street, split, corner and six line

To better understand each of these bets and their odds, you can take a look at the table below:

Inside Bets Details

Chip: 1

Bet Type: Straight

Bet Description: Single number bet. Place the chip on your chosen number

Payout: 35:1

Chip: 2

Bet Type: Split

Bet Description: Two numbers adjacent on the table. Place the chip on the line that separates these numbers

Payout: 17:1

Chip: 3

Bet Type: Street

Bet Description: Three consecutive numbers. Place the chip on the outer corner of the row

Payout: 11:1

Chip: 4

Bet Type: Corner

Bet Description: Four neighboring numbers. Place the chip in the central corner of those four numbers

Payout: 8:1

Chip: 5

Bet Type: Six Line

Bet Description: Two neighboring street bets. Place the chip on the common outer corner of the two rows

Payout: 5:1

Outside Bets

As the name suggests, outside bets are placed on the areas that are outside the numbers. These bets usually have better odds, as they cover multiple numbers. However, the better the odds, the smaller the payout so it all depends on what you’re looking for. The outside bets are as follows:

  • High or Low. Bet on whether the lucky number will be between 1-18 or 19-36.

  • Red or Black. Bet on the color of the lucky number.

  • Odd or Even. Bet on whether the lucky number is odd or even.

Announced Bets

These types of special bets are found in European and French roulette. The most well-known type of announced bet is called “Voisins du Zero” (neighbors of zero) and is a nine-chip bet. It includes both split and corner bets on the zero and the numbers on either side of it.

There’s also the Jeu Zero (zero game), a four-chip bet that covers a straight bet on 26 and 3 splits on the numbers next to the zero. Last but not least, you have Tiers du Cylindre (third of the wheel), a six-chip bet. This type of bet consists of 6 splits that cover a third of the wheel, from 27 to 33.

Roulette Online - Tips for Beginners

Because it’s a game based purely on chance, there’s no real roulette online strategy you can employ to make sure you win. However, there are some things you can do to increase your odds:

  • Know the game variants. Compared to other casino games, roulette has a higher house edge. However, different roulette types come with different levels of house edge. The best way to improve your odds is to play the variants that come with the lowest house edge - the European roulette is a great choice in this case.

  • Play for free. If you’re new to roulette or just casino games in general, it’s a good idea to try some free roulette games for fun before you start betting real money. When you play online roulette free, you get the opportunity to try out all the variations you want and see which one feels better for you.

  • Try the “en prison” rule. This rule really works for the player’s advantage. The en prison rule will allow you to win back the money you lost if the ball lands on zero, as long as you’ve placed a 50/50 bet (red vs. black, high vs. low, even vs. odd).

  • Place outside bets. Beginners find outside bets the easiest to play, as they offer better odds. Because outside bets usually cover larger areas of the wheel, they’re the perfect choice for those players who don’t want to risk it all.

After you’ve done that, you can freely enjoy your bonus to play online roulette free.

Most of the online roulette casinos are eager to get new players trying their games so they will often gift their users with goodies and bonuses. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular such bonuses!

  1. Welcome Bonus. The top online roulette sites will make sure their new players are being treated right from the very first seconds they spend on the site. Welcome bonuses are a great way to do that. The most common type of welcome bonus will double up the money you first deposit when you first join the casino. Some of the more generous casinos will even offer up to 500% in bonuses.

  2. No Deposit Bonuses. The no deposit bonuses are awesome because they offer you the chance to try out any casino games without having to risk real money. As the name suggests, you won’t need to make a deposit to claim this bonus - all you need to do is create an account and the bonus will automatically get assigned to you. You can claim this bonus at many online casinos, including casinos with no deposit slots.

  3. Deposit Bonuses. Deposit bonuses are a popular method casinos use to get their new players to make a deposit. Casinos usually offer deposit bonuses up to your 4th deposit. It’s good to know that when they go up to 100%, these bonuses can be used on table games such as roulette, blackjack or baccarat. The ones that go up to 200% can only be used on slots.

  4. Loyalty Bonuses. Loyalty bonuses are a great way brand new casinos use to reward their long-time players. These bonuses are usually awarded when the user achieves a certain milestone set by the casino - money spent, number of games played, time spent on the website etc.

Most Popular Online Roulette Versions

As we previously mentioned, there are a few variations of roulette that you should be aware of. While heavily similar, they have some different sets of rules and odds. Let’s take a look!

  • European Roulette. European roulette is the most popular roulette variant. The European wheel only has one zero, which means that the house edge is lower than that of the other variations of this game.

  • American Roulette. American roulette comes with a double zero, increasing the house edge. The numbers are also sequenced differently but the types of bets remain the same as in the European roulette.

  • French Roulette. French roulette is similar to the European one, with the variation of another zero being added. The bets are pretty much the same, but with the addition of “En Prison” and “La Partage”.

  • Mini Roulette. This roulette variant is extremely popular in the online medium and is perfect for those players who feel intimidated by how many numbers and betting options come with regular roulette types. It only has 13 slots and also incorporates the “La Partage” type of bet.

  • Multi Ball Roulette. The multi ball roulette will allow you to play with up to 10 balls at once. This type of roulette also features new types of bets and is usually played on the European format.

  • Multi Wheel Roulette. As the name suggests, multi wheel roulette comes with more than one wheel you can place your bets on. You can play with 8 wheels at a time and is usually played on the European setup.

Play Live Roulette Games Online

At this point, roulette needs no introduction. It’s one of the most popular casino games and it was only natural it would be among the first ones to get live casino versions. Nowadays, you can spin the wheel, flick the ball and place your bets against a real-life dealer but without leaving your home.

The live variation of roulette is especially great because you can even talk to other gamblers around the virtual table. The whole experience is done through a live stream and is meant to be as close to the actual brick-and-mortar casinos as possible.

Online Roulette on Mobile

Online mobile roulette isn’t as hard to find as you might think. Pretty much every casino has either a mobile web version or a dedicated app where you can play free mobile roulette. The rules aren’t different - the only thing that changes is the size of your screen.

Every type of roulette is available on mobile and you can even play live roulette. So you can place your bets from wherever you are, whether you’re commuting to work or just hanging out on your couch.

History of Roulette

The first form of roulette was invented in France, in the 18th century. In 1843, in the German spa casino, François and Louis Blanc introduced the single 0 style roulette wheel to compete with casinos offering the traditional wheel with single and double zero house pockets.

In the 19th century, roulette spread all over Europe and the US, becoming one of the most popular casino games. And during the first part of the 20th century, the only casino towns of note that played roulette were Monte Carlo (with the traditional single zero French roulette) and Las Vegas (with the American double zero wheel). In 1996, the first online casino (InterCasino) made it possible to play roulette online.

And in case you wanted more roulette facts, we’ve got you covered with these five roulette fun facts:

  1. Roulette is sometimes referred to as “The Devil’s Game” because the sum of all the numbers on the wheel is 666.

  2. Unlike other casino games such as blackjack or poker, it’s considered rude to bring drinks with you at the roulette wheel.

  3. When a black number hits, it doesn’t mean red is next.

  4. The most commonly played number on roulette is 17.

  5. The record for the same number hitting consecutively was hit at the Rio Casino in Vegas - the number 19 hit seven times in a row!
