African Gems: Looks Appealing, but Winning Money Is Hard

I liked the look of African Gems and thought it was a well-designed slot. The background image, which showed a vast African plain at sunrise, was attractive, and the soundtrack matched the theme perfectly and was suitably atmospheric.

The slot sounded great thanks to its respin round and free spins with no low-paying symbols present. However, my experience playing it wasn’t the best. To start with, I didn’t score any major wins in the base game. My biggest payout from this was just 6x my bet.

I decided to take a risk and buy respins with one to three feature gems active for the cost of 75x. The gem I got was the Mystery one, which turned into one of four jackpots. It awarded me the smallest jackpot, which was Mini (15x).

Another Mystery symbol landed and again awarded me the Mini jackpot. My total payout, including the two Mini jackpots, was 53x my bet. This was still good, but it wasn’t enough to break even.

There was another option that cost 300x and guaranteed all three feature gems. I bought it and was disappointed that my final win from the round was 108x, slightly over a third of what I’d paid. Obviously, I was hoping to make a profit or just about break even.

Paying such a large amount of money was a risk, but it backfired. On the plus side, I liked how the round worked and saw that it could be rewarding. I was just unlucky enough not to really benefit from it much.

If you want to give African Gems a go, I suggest avoiding buying special features. Hopefully you’ll get to play the free spins round too, which never triggered for me.
