Every pirate dreams of stumbling upon a forgotten island loaded with gold, but 7 Seas Pirates by Merkur Gaming made me work harder than most crews ever would. Hidden somewhere beyond the tropical shoreline are 12 free spins, a bonus wheel with multipliers, and a 5,000x top prize. Whether any of that treasure is worth chasing is another story.

The game sticks to a classic 5x3 layout with 10 paylines, where symbol payouts range from 0.20x to 100x your bet. Going in, I wasn't expecting fireworks from such an old-school setup, but even then, the base game felt unusually stingy. 

My first 10 spins failed to connect a single winning combination, and throughout the session, it regularly took more than 6 spins to land a payout. When wins finally arrived, they usually sat between 0.50x and 2x my bet, although the premium island symbol occasionally stretched things to around 10x.

The Pirate Captain is easily the most useful symbol on the reels. Besides substituting for regular symbols, it also pays on its own from just two matching symbols, giving the base game the occasional lifeline when standard combinations refuse to cooperate.

Landing three Treasure Chest scatters finally unlocked 12 free spins, although getting there took far longer than I'd have liked. During the feature, any single win of 20x or more spins the Bonus Wheel, which can either repeat that payout once or twice or instantly award the 5,000x jackpot. Unfortunately, my feature never got close. The entire bonus finished at under 18x my bet, meaning I never even qualified for a Bonus Wheel spin.

The pirate theme does its job, but the gameplay rarely backs it up. Long dry spells, infrequent scatters, and a bonus that never reached its own secondary feature left me feeling like I'd spent more time searching for treasure than actually finding it. If you're after a straightforward old-school slot, it'll do the job, but don't expect smooth sailing.
