A Slow March Through History in Age of Rome

I’ve spent a good amount of time spinning the reels in Age of Rome, and I have to admit that it didn’t quite win me over. The theme had promise: ancient Roman banners, dramatic horns, and symbols of emperors and legions. But the execution felt dated.

It has a 5x3 layout with 25 adjustable paylines and includes wilds, scatters, and a free spins bonus. But despite these standard features, the overall experience felt outdated and a little too slow.

Wins during the base game were rare. I counted roughly one payout every 7 to 8 spins. When they came, they were often smaller than my bet. The wild symbol (the Roman soldier) does help complete combinations, but it does not appear frequently. The scatter (the golden coin) triggers the free games feature, but only after about 180 spins did I finally unlock it. That round awarded me 10 free spins with a 3x multiplier. Unfortunately, it paid just under 25x my total bet, which didn’t make up for the long wait.

The game’s visuals are flat. The symbols look like they were pulled from an early 2000s strategy game. The animation is minimal, and there is no transition between spins that builds excitement.

The background music is a basic trumpet-driven loop that repeats until it becomes distracting. There is also no quick spin option, so if you prefer fast-paced slots, this one might feel too slow.

On the plus side, the game is easy to understand. New players will not feel overwhelmed. The rules are clear, and the paytable is simple. But if you are looking for big features, modern animations, or multiple bonus games, Age of Rome is probably not the best pick.
