Lightning Box Games’ underwater adventure in Dolphin Gold has been raising some eyebrows ever since its release. After trying out the game for myself I can safely say this slot still holds a lot of fun inside with up to 21 free spins, 2 different wild symbols, and up to 40 paylines. 

The base game is relatively simple to begin with. You can choose to place a bet for symbol pays and a bet for how many paylines you want to access during gameplay. You get a 5x4 grid with medium volatility and start off with 40 paylines which in my case was helping me win every 2 to 6 spins. 

However, the symbol pays aren’t the best and if you want bigger wins while not breaking the bank, I’d recommend shifting the paylines down to 10 or 20 and increasing the symbol pays bet amount a little. After a little tweaking, I was able to make consistent wins every 6 to 10  spins with the amount coming between 0.5x to 7x returns. 

Finally, the free spins bonus is relatively hard to trigger in the game and you don’t get to skip the grind using a bonus buy. You will get one or two dolphin symbols almost every round but you need 6 to trigger the feature. 

I was able to trigger the feature after about 40 spins with returns coming just shy of 20x my bet, not bad for the first time. After trying it out a few more times, I’d expect winning between 15x to 35x returns through the bonus game which is still pretty impressive keeping in mind I never got over 12 free spins! 

All in all, the Dolphin Gold slot game by Lightning Box Games may look and feel a bit outdated by today’s standards. However, that same look makes it a charming hit of nostalgia that can rival even a few modern slot titles in terms of mechanics and features.
