Mad scientists never seem satisfied with ordinary experiments, and Massive Studios' Professor Lightning is no different. In his laboratory, lightning strikes can supercharge multipliers up to 512x, with a 20,000x max win waiting at the end. I spent a few hours in the professor's lab, and here's what I got.

Built on a six-reel, six-row grid, the game uses a cascading cluster pays system, where five or more matching symbols connected horizontally or vertically create wins. I realized the base game was slower than most cluster slots.

I was usually waiting 5 to 6 spins before seeing a winning cluster, and those payouts generally returned between 1x and 2x my bet. The real deal comes from the lightning reels positioned above and beside the main grid.

Whenever matching lightning bolts land, they create 2x multiplier frames or double existing ones, eventually growing as high as a 512x multiplier. To reach those heights, however, you'll need to keep landing consecutive winning cascades, which is nearly impossible, so to speak.

In my case, I saw the multipliers climb as high as 32x, but thanks to the low symbol payouts, my highest base game win reached only 14x my bet. As for the bonus, landing 3, 4, or 5 scatters awards 8, 12, or 20 free spins, with 5 scatters also guaranteeing sticky multipliers on the following spin.

It took me around 80 spins to trigger my first set of free spins, which returned only 79x my bet. I managed to trigger the feature a second time later, but even that session improved only slightly, paying 90x my bet. Considering how long both bonuses took to arrive, I walked away expecting much more.

If you don't feel like waiting, the game includes several shortcuts. The ante bet costs 2x your stake and increases the chance of triggering free spins fourfold, while Bonus Buy 1 costs 100x and Bonus Buy 2 costs 500x, with both unlocking the game's increased 20,000x maximum win.

Overall, Professor Lightning has all the ingredients of a good cluster slot, but my session never fully capitalized on them. If the multipliers had remained sticky in the base game, I could have seen myself spending far more time inside the professor's laboratory.
