Columbus Deluxe Slot Review & Free Play

Columbus Deluxe: Set Sail for the New World and Chase Wins up to 500x Your Bet!

Set sail to the uncharted shores of the new world in Novomatic’s Columbus Deluxe, where up to 500x symbol payouts and 10 free spins are waiting to be discovered. With its classic visuals and nostalgic flashy animations, this older slot has a certain charm, but is it still worth playing today? Let’s find out below.

Novomatic went for a straightforward gaming experience with this slot, featuring a 5x3 grid, 10 paylines, and medium volatility. While the visuals might initially seem outdated, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the game looked on a 1440p screen. The simple animations even had a certain nostalgic charm to them.

Coming back to gameplay, I was a little worried about the low number of winning lines but surprisingly I was landing wins every 2 to 3 spins on average. These wins weren’t that high as most of them fell between 0.50x to 2x my bet but I wasn’t making big losses thanks to a few high-paying symbols getting me up to 6.5x wins from time to time.

It was pretty clear that the game wanted me to also use the gamble mini-game to push my luck and I did just that after playing the game for over 10 minutes. It is a simple card-based mini-game that was popular in the early 2010s and even shows up today in some titles. An upside-down card is placed and guessing its color correctly doubles your win.

Although there were no suit pays to quadruple your win for higher stakes, the gamble feature was still useful. It allowed me to double some of my smaller wins up to 1x my bet, but I didn’t push my luck too far. Bigger wins were hard to come by, and I didn’t want to risk losing what I had already made.

The free spins proved to be a minor challenge to trigger as scatters were not that common on the reels. I needed 3 of them to activate the feature which took me nearly 20 minutes to do but I landed some high-paying symbol combinations during the round which ultimately led me to an impressive 47.50x win from the bonus round.

Columbus Deluxe does not break new ground in terms of mechanics and features, it's a straightforward game with decent potential for profitability and a fun gamble round for those who enjoy higher stakes. While it lacks the quality-of-life improvements we have come to expect in modern titles, it is still worth checking out, especially if you are in the mood for a bit of nostalgia.
