Sword of Ares by Pragmatic Play brings the Greek God of War with you among towering marble pillars and ancient ruins in a battle for divine riches. Cascading wins, bomb symbols, a progressive multiplier collection system, and 15 free spins all combine to chase a hefty 10,000x max win. It looked like another Gates of Olympus spin-off on paper, but I wanted to see how generous Ares was.

The game uses a 6x5 scatter pays grid, where 8 or more matching symbols create a win before cascading for another chance. Regular symbol values range from 0.25x to 20x your bet, which is a respectable paytable, although it comes at the expense of the massive premium symbol payouts found in some similar slots.

Sitting above the reels is the Multiplier Collection meter, which unlocks progressively larger random multipliers as enough winning symbols are collected during a tumble sequence.

Unfortunately, I never managed to make much use of that feature in the base game. Unlocking the very first multiplier requires 20 winning symbols to be collected in a single spin, and even with cascades that's a pretty demanding target. Hercules himself would probably need a couple of attempts. Instead, most of my session consisted of steady but unspectacular wins between 0.50x and 1.50x, usually arriving every 3 to 5 spins through smaller symbol clusters and short tumble chains.

Landing 4 scatters came much sooner than I expected, awarding 15 free spins. The bonus expands the multiplier ladder to six different levels, while bomb symbols continue clearing sections of the grid to create more cascades and help fill the collection meter much faster than in the base game.

Across five consecutive spins, I upgraded from a 3x multiplier to 7x before eventually reaching 13x, and those growing multipliers did most of the heavy lifting. By the end of the feature, the bonus had built up to a satisfying 98.30x payout.

The free spins completely changed my opinion of Sword of Ares. The base game never felt particularly generous, but once the multiplier ladder started progressing every few spins I started to see the potential these smaller combos carried. Overall, it’s a fun twist on the Greek Mythology setting we’ve seen in the Gates of Olympus series. But by itself, the Sword of Ares slot feels a bit too dim to play for extended sessions.
