As soon as my blindfold was lifted, I found myself standing before a five-reel, five-row cage barely holding back those unholy creatures. This forsaken laboratory runs on a cascading cluster system, where five or more matching symbols must connect to form a win. Simple rules, though the setting makes it feel anything but.

While pushing through the carnage, I was landing wins every 4 to 5 spins, with average returns between 2x and 2.5x my bet. Slowly but surely, I would have been overwhelmed by those creatures if the frequent wilds had not come to my aid.

Thanks to their regular appearances, I was able to trigger cascades that led to bigger hits like 12x and 15x my bet. Just as I was settling into the base game, I randomly landed the DEATH symbols and was pulled into a separate feature.

There, I was given a choice between three weapons to “liberate” a zombie. I chose the chained gun, perhaps out of instinct, and in doing so, earned a 32x return. A rather civil exchange, all things considered.

After nearly 80 spins, I finally reached the free spins round with the help of four scatters. I was granted 15 spins and walked away with a 193x return. If you cannot reach these features naturally, there is also a bonus buy option at 100x your bet.

That said, nothing is guaranteed here, so it is worth being cautious. I personally stuck to the natural flow of the game and did not rely on those options.

In my opinion, Mancala Gaming has done a stunning job with Freak Machine. With its gritty visuals, zombie-filled reels, and strong reward potential in both the base game and bonus round, it left a lasting impression. I can see myself returning to this world again.
